Real "Healing" is Embracing Acceptance Post-Trauma
My family will never change, why even try?
I’m always dating the “wrong person”, I’ll just give up.
I just failed my college class, my GPA is plummeting, what’s the point?
I gained 20lbs since giving birth, I feel awful!
I’m always sad/depressed, this is my “normal”, so why should I try those coping skills?
My anxiety is a “part of me”, I can’t live without.
I hear these statement and other similar ones constantly within my therapy sessions, the constant feeling of defeat, regret, and overall shame for human scenarios that can happen to anybody. Human life isn’t simple, everyone gets dealt a different set of cards, people will treat you terribly, and the outcomes are always unpredictable, so what is the point?
Finding PURPOSE:
Everyone has their own reasons to live life, even when dealt all of these barriers and challenges. The overall objective in therapy is to discover my clients purpose & what are their objectives in life. It’s a unique response from each individual, but it’s also the most challenging one to provide because it requires overall “acceptance” of the circumstances they have lived through and are presently living.
Acceptance Reduces Suffering
Resisting reality often intensifies pain. By accepting your circumstances, you can reduce the emotional burden you carry.
Example: Instead of focusing on the 20 lbs gained, shift your perspective to the incredible strength your body has shown in bringing new life into the world.
Acceptance Promotes Self-Compassion
Embrace self-compassion by acknowledging that everyone faces difficulties and that it’s okay to feel vulnerable.
Example: Failing a class doesn’t define your worth or intelligence. It’s a stepping stone towards learning and growth.
Acceptance Enhances Emotional Resilience
When you accept your emotions without judgment, you build resilience and adaptability.
Example: Recognizing anxiety as a part of your life, rather than your identity, empowers you to find coping strategies that work for you.
Acceptance Fosters Personal Growth
By accepting your current reality, you create space for change and growth.
Example: Instead of viewing depression as your “normal,” see it as a signal that something needs attention and care.
Conclusion
Acceptance is not about giving up or resigning to a difficult fate. It’s about acknowledging where you are and finding peace within that reality. By embracing acceptance, you open doors to emotional resilience, self-compassion, and personal growth.
Remember, each person’s journey is unique. Your purpose and path will differ from others, and that’s okay. Embrace your journey with acceptance, and watch how it transforms your life.
Sincerely, JoJo
