Medication + Therapy
In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to bring up a controversial topic that many discuss when starting therapy. The combination of medication and therapy, taking the step to start medication can be both empowering and daunting, but it's often an essential part of the healing journey for many individuals. Medication does not equate to "long term" or "dependency".
It's important to remember that medication is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and its effectiveness can vary from person to person. Before starting any medication, it's crucial to have an open and honest discussion with your therapist & healthcare provider or psychiatrist. They will assess your symptoms, medical history, and individual needs to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you. As an advocate for my clients I always discuss "exit plans", these types of plans are depending if my clients would ever like to work towards exiting the use of their medication ethically. For some individuals, the use of psychotropics can be short term, and for others they may need them for a longer period of time. It is possible to have an "exit plan" for certain psychotropics with the proper assistance of your providers.
It's also important to remember that medication is only one part of a comprehensive treatment plan for mental health conditions. Therapy, self-care practices, lifestyle changes, and social support all play crucial roles in your overall well-being.
If you're considering starting medication, know that you're not alone. Many individuals have found relief and improvement in their symptoms with the right medication and support. Take it one step at a time, and remember that seeking help is a courageous step towards your healing journey.
Sincerely, JoJo
