Is Your Child's Well-Being at Risk? A Must-Read for Parents and Coaches
Hidden Costs of Extracurricular Activities
As we approach the new school year, I wanted to remind the parents that there are a few things that should be taken into consideration. Extracurricular activities are an additional benefit, but are not a requirement to raise healthy and well developed children into young adults.
I recently made a few videos explaining what I have seen in both parents and children who are part of extracurricular activities whether they are physical sports or creative arts. The reality of the world as of this moment is that these extracurricular activities are such high demanding that it is causing a strain on the household dynamics.
Including marriages, mental health, physical health, financials, and overall the development of, appropriate life skills that the child needs. This is to not say that extracurriculars are not overall beneficial, if continuous check ins are being done with the child; but in my professional experience, there are limited amount of cases where there is participation in extracurricular activities without any negative consequences long term.
So with this being said, I urge all of my parents and coaches to check in with their children and teenagers during these activities and making sure that they are receiving appropriate support, mental health resources, and understanding that their overall well-being is of top priority, even if it means delaying their activities for a short period of time. I also urge parents to understand they do not need to sacrifice their entire life for these extracurricular activities.
